Quality and storage

In good hands.

Well treated is half the battle!

The quality of seed potatoes is not only determined by genetics. Storage, preparation and seamless quality control are key factors that determine how vital, healthy and ready for planting the planting stock ultimately arrives at the farms.

Norika relies on precise control, consistent hygiene and complete traceability.

What quality means

Pure variety,
healthy and vital

Three closely linked levels are crucial for the best yields: genetic, health and physiological quality.

Genetic quality ensures that a variety exhibits exactly the characteristics for which it was bred – from yield and tuber shape to starch content and suitability for processing.

Health quality includes freedom from viruses, bacteria and fungal diseases. It is ensured through intensive field inspections, laboratory tests and state approval procedures.

The physiological quality describes the internal condition of the tubers: stable dormancy, vital shoots and the right conditioning for uniform emergence.

Optimal storage

A lot of work for the perfect rest

The performance of seed potatoes depends heavily on how well they are stored. With precise temperature control, we prevent both pre-sprouting and cold stress, while controlled humidity and continuous ventilation prevent condensation and storage rot.

At the same time, dormancy management takes place: the tubers are managed in such a way that they are physiologically stable but ready to start on the delivery date. Only then are the batches sorted and calibrated. Each tuber is assessed in terms of size and physiological condition; only perfect material remains in the stock.

Depending on the requirements, the seed potatoes are delivered cleaned or unwashed. Export markets often have their own specifications. In any case, each batch remains fully traceable – all the way back to the original cutting.

Security for companies

Why quality & storage are so important

Optimum planting material leads to uniform emergence, vigorous crops and reliable yields. Errors in storage or physiological condition, on the other hand, have a direct impact on tuber set, growth behavior and susceptibility to disease.

That is why Norika relies on a closed quality and storage system that offers producers maximum safety – from the grower to the field.

The potato warehouse in Kröpelin, which was founded in 1972, has been successively developed and reached a storage capacity of 15,000 tons with the completion of the new warehouse in 2009. Potatoes are multiplied, stored and prepared for dispatch on an area of 400 hectares in five farms or parts of farms connected to the warehouse.

Modern storage facilities, refrigeration and efficient potato-protecting processing plants are the basis for timely delivery and quality-oriented supply to customers.

The company is managed by Mr. Wolfgang Langehenke and the warehouse is supervised by Ms. Evelyn Meyer. The NKL team will be happy to answer any questions you may have using the contact details below.

Farmyard customers for small packages, both for seed and table potatoes, can also purchase their potatoes directly from the warehouse. Keep an eye out for our cellaring campaigns – we look forward to your visit:

The warehouse in Sanitz was built in 1968 in several construction phases with a total storage capacity of approx. 12,000 tons.

One of the special features of the storehouse is the 3 t storehouse boxes, which are filled with potatoes directly from the harvester in the field. These enable flexible storage of seed potatoes in different qualities and stages. Optimal storage in terms of ventilation due to the favorable dimensions of the pallet is a prerequisite for gentle processing and sorting of even smaller batches.

Efficient loading technology, gentle processing technology and large crate storage ensure that our customers are supplied on time and in the right quality.

Potatoes have been bred at the Lindenhof Norika conservation breeding station near Demmin since 1946. From the very beginning, Lindenhof has been very successful in breeding new potatoes and maintaining existing ones. In total, the Lindenhof station has produced 26 potato varieties.

In the meantime, the focus of the site is no longer on new breeding, but solely on the maintenance breeding of existing varieties. This has the task of feeding pure, healthy seed potatoes with the typical varietal and value-determining characteristics of already approved potato varieties into the propagation system every year.

Farm-gate sales are also extremely popular in the region. Restaurants and private households are very happy to take advantage of the range of floury and predominantly waxy table potatoes. In spring, allotment gardeners also have the opportunity to purchase the right variety for their own cultivation from a wide range of seed potatoes.

The Lindenhof team, headed by Mr. Oliver Steinbach, will be happy to provide you with further information and answer any questions you may have:

The Lanckensburg Norika breeding station, located on the island of Rügen near Altenkirchen on the Wittow peninsula, is the nursery of our seedling production. This is where healthy seedling precursors and elite seedlings for multi-stage propagation are produced.

The Lanckensburg site was selected due to its isolated geographical location. In addition to the harsh healthy climate, the production areas here are surrounded on three sides by the Baltic Sea, so that the contamination of young potatoes with aphid-borne viruses can be minimized.

Mr. Riccardo Bär and his team in Lanckensburg will be happy to provide you with further information:

The warehouse and agricultural business Westerdeich GbR are located in the North Sea resort of Carolinensiel in the district of Wittmund in Lower Saxony. A few centuries ago, the area where Carolinensiel is located today was still an outcrop of the North Sea. With the systematic reclamation of land through diking, new, fertile marshland was wrested from the North Sea piece by piece.

The silt-rich, heavy clay soil is particularly suitable for the cultivation of inert variety types to achieve higher vigor.

Our team in Lower Saxony, headed by Mr. Jan Hogrefe, will be happy to provide you with further information:
